Building Participation

Meaningful participation helps children and young people:

  • feel connected and committed to decisions, and
  • enhances their self-esteem and sense of control.

Viewpoint’s recent work with Judy Garsed, the recently retired Advocate for Children in Care in Western Australia, has identified the key elements underpinning the establishment of regular, meaningful participation by children and young people in their individual plans.

These can be seen in Viewpoint’s Participation Wheel - a co-ordinated set of measures, reflecting over 10 years’ experience of using Viewpoint across the State for Care Plan Reviews.

(Currently over 3,000 children and young people use Viewpoint for their care plan review.)

And in order to provide feedback on each of the Participation Wheel elements, Viewpoint has created an Audit Tool – a quick and easy method that identifies any strengths, and areas for development to improve participation in your organisation, and provides a useful reflection on what is required to build an effective participation strategy.

Everyone has a part to play!

If you want to try Viewpoint’s new Audit Tool, click here.

You can access this on any device. (It’s particularly suited to smart phones.)

Once complete, simply click on: ‘See your Participation Wheel Report’, and a score for each element and an overall score displays.

Here’s an example report.

Ask key staff (managers, supervisors, and practitioners) to use the above link, and note or print their report scores, or we can provide you with an organisation specific link which you can distribute for staff to use.

‘Quite a disturbing experience for me as the Department scored quite low in my assessment! I think it will be a useful process.’
Manager, Children’s Services.

Use Viewpoint’s Audit Tool live in a management meeting to stimulate discussion!!
